Managing Your Patience When the Days Feel Longer
Patience is often talked about like it’s something you either have or don’t have. In reality, it’s directly connected to capacity. And summer stretches your capacity in ways that are easy to overlook.
Longer days mean more interactions, more noise, and more decisions. Even small things begin to feel bigger because there’s less separation between moments. During the school year, there are natural breaks. In the summer, those breaks are limited or nonexistent.
What many parents experience isn’t a lack of patience. It’s exhaustion from being “on” for too long without a reset.
That’s why pausing matters. Not as a reaction, but as a strategy. Taking a moment before responding allows you to reset your tone and your approach. Without that pause, small situations escalate faster than they need to.
You don’t have to respond to everything immediately. Creating space between what happens and how you respond gives you back control over the moment.
Patience is not about holding everything in. It’s about giving yourself enough space to respond in a way that actually works.
Activity
When you feel your patience drop, pause for 30 seconds before responding. Step away if needed, then come back.
