Building Outdoors Teaches Problem Solving
Children don’t need perfect materials to build.
They need the opportunity.
Outside, everything becomes a tool. Sticks, rocks, even the ground.
For infants, it starts with holding and exploring safe objects.
For toddlers, it becomes stacking and knocking things down.
For preschoolers, it turns into thinking. What will stay up? What falls? What happens if I change this?
Same materials. Different levels of learning.
That’s how problem solving begins.
Simple Activity to Try at Home
Go outside and gather a few natural items. Sticks, rocks, leaves.
Let infants explore safely with supervision.
Let toddlers stack and knock things down.
Ask preschoolers simple questions like
What can you build
What made it fall
How can you make it stay
You don’t need anything special. Just space and a few materials.
